Mugger Crocodile in Chitwan National Park

Taken in Chitwan National Park, Nepal, by ECN member and 2018 speaker, Phoebe Griffith. The mugger (Crocodylus palustris) population in this Park and surrounding community forests is recovering well due to protection of rivers and wetlands by both the Park and communities.

An American Croc in San Pedro, Belize

This photo was taken by ECNM speaker Joe Kristoffer Partyka. Behind a hotel, some people were bringing tourists down at dusk and charging them to feed crocs. The Crocodile Research Coalition (headed up by ECNM speaker Marisa Tellez) were brought in together with ECNM speaker Flavio Morrissey to mitigate the issue before someone had a negative interaction with the crocs. At first, 17 crocs showed up as soon as they heard voices. Flavio made a plan to use non-invasive negative reinforcement training to remove the positive connection the crocs had to human presence. The last day of training, only three crocs remained, and they would no longer approach when humans came down to the waters edge. After that the security staff were trained and the responsibility for continuing the negative reinforcement was transferred to them.

A picture atlas from 1864 by L.J. Fitzinger, an Austrian zoologist who lived 1802-1884. Fitzinger was curator at the Naturhisorisches Museum, and director of the zoos of Munich and Budapest.

From the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) archives, this label was in the archived papers of Joan Proctor 'dragon lady' and London Zoo's first female Curator of Reptiles. Signed DWO and dated '51 - 20 years after Proctor died. How are they in her papers?
